Tell These Fifteen Legislators To Keep Their Promise

Posted by MSU College Democrats | September 24, 2009

IMG_0625Since yesterday, the Michigan Promise Scholarship is one step closer to being eliminated after a budget conference committee approved the elimination of the Promise. The elimination of the Michigan Promise will now move to both a full vote in the Michigan House and Senate.

If you receive the Promise, you are in jeopardy of losing up to $2,000 dollars this year that you would be forced to pay, since this money has already been credited towards your academic bills.

We already have the gracious support of so many State Representatives who will stand behind us and vote “no” if they Promise is eliminated in the final bill. However, it could be eliminated by a slim majority of Representatives who are being pressured to balance a budget at any cost, including cutting the Promise. Students need to focus their attention on the following twenty seventeen Representatives who need to be reminded that they need to support higher education and Michigan’s future.

Call these Representatives TODAY and let them know they need to keep the full Michigan Promise Scholarship:

Speaker of the House Andy Dillon (517-373-0857)

Representative George Cushingberry, Jr. (517-373-2276)

Representative Marty Griffin (517-373-1795)

Representative Joel Sheltrown (517-373-3817)

Representative John Espinoza (517-373-0835)

Representative Tim Bledsoe (517-373-0154)

Representative Ed Clemente (517-373-0140)

Representative Marc Corriveau (517-373-3816)

Representative Fred Durhal, Jr. (517-373-0844)

Representative Douglas Geiss (517-373-0852)

Representative Richard Hammel (517-373-7557)

Representative Harold Haugh (517-373-0854)

Representative David Nathan (517-373-3815)

Representative Roy Schmidt (517-373-0822)

Representative Tim Melton (517-373-0475)

Representative Andy Neumann (517-373-0833) WILL SUPPORT PROMISE SCHOLARSHIP

Representative Terry Brown (517-373-0476) WILL SUPPORT PROMISE SCHOLARSHIP

Representative Robert Jones (517-373-0476) WILL SUPPORT PROMISE SCHOLARSHIP

Representative Jeff Mayes (517-373-0158) WILL SUPPORT PROMISE SCHOLARSHIP

Representative Richard LeBlanc (517-373-2576) WILL SUPPORT PROMISE SCHOLARSHIP

When calling, make sure to hit the following three points:

1. Make a few brief points as to why the issue concerns you.

  • I rely upon the Michigan Promise Scholarship to help pay for school.
  • In the face of tuition hikes, rising book costs, the Michigan Promise Scholarship helps to me to defray at least some of these costs.
  • Without the Michigan Promise Scholarship, I might not be able to continue to afford to go to the school I go to now, or to even stay enrolled in college at all.
  • The Michigan Promise Scholarship helps workers train for high paying jobs in growing industries, such as healthcare and technology, which will bring prosperity to the state in the long run.

2. Be clear that you want them to vote in favor of the Promise Scholarship and not take any action to reduce or eliminate the fund.

3. Thank the staffer for his/her time and indicate that you appreciate his/her willingness to listen and record your comments.

We can’t wait any longer. If you don’t act, the Promise Scholarship is going to be eliminated. Students from around the state are assembling today and over the weekend to organize massive phone banks on campus to specifically call these twenty Representatives.
All students, parents and concerned citizens need to have a unified message over the next 48 hours to these members. We need to flood their phone lines with support for the Promise. This is a fight for Michigan’s future!
