The MSU College Democrats are committed to the standards of open, accountable, and ethical government practices. Information technology is the great equalizer of our time, and the internet can and should be used to make government actions more transparent to the public. The federal government has recently begun to move in this direction, through websites like data.gov. We support and encourage more movement in this direction.
These principles should also be applied directly to university spending and activities. With the cost of tuition rising constantly, it is essential that students be aware of where their dollars are spent. We encourage the university to leverage technology to allow more and better access to information relevant to students and the community.
The MSU College Democrats believe the challenges related to health care quality, cost, and delivery are among the most important facing us today.
Lack of quality, affordable health insurance is the leading cause of bankruptcy in the United States. This issue is especially relevant to college students; a 2002 study* found that 30% of students have no insurance whatsoever. Many more are underinsured. The study also found that those without insurance were less likely to complete college.
We believe access to quality health care is a fundamental right for all Americans. College students should not have to worry about losing their health insurance when a family member loses a job. Illness or injury should not be a financial setback to students otherwise focused on their studies. Mental health and addiction therapy should be made available alongside physical treatment. A focus should also be put on preventative research and methods.
With these principles in mind, we support efforts to modernize our system as well as expand coverage for all Americans regardless of income. We urge Congress to work with President Obama and his plan to ensure choice, quality and affordability for all Americans.

This organization strongly supports reducing our dependence upon foreign oil. Our nation, as well as Michigan in particular, should focus on research that will reduce emissions and costs, improve public transportation, and create jobs. We applaud our city of East Lansing and its efforts to improve the environment while being energy conservative through initiatives rewarding and encouraging green buildings. We encourage the university to uphold these new standards. We stand with student groups promoting the conservation of energy. We encourage individual citizens to take the initiative to make environmentally friendly decisions by responsibly using electricity and water and by purchasing energy efficient appliances when possible. Creating and protecting our own sources of energy will only serve to better our nation.
The College Democrats of Michigan State University fundamentally believe in the value of education.
In the land of opportunity, no child should be left without a quality public education, from kindergarten through secondary education. The wellbeing of our nation depends upon a quality workforce only to be created by education.
We support a strong curriculum within public education that supports students and prepares them for college. We must hold our standards for students high while holding educators, parents, schools, communities and leaders accountable to our students.
We oppose the negative retributions the current No Child Left Behind Act has had on the quality of education in our public schools and look to this administration for reevaluation and change to make a better, more efficient learning environment.
MSU College Democrats do not support the use of public funds to subsidize private education, but rather stand for using those funds to help schools who need it rather than abandoning them.
This organization fully supports a low cost of tuition for higher education institutions to promote the accessibility of success to all who care to improve themselves. Making higher education more realistic for all is an important step bringing our nation and state back on track financially.
We are fully committed to the American ideal of equal protection under the law for all people, regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability, or economic background. While MSU and the American people in general have made great strides in equal treatment of all citizens, we realize progress in this area is not complete. The MSU College Democrats will continue to fight for efforts that promote equality of treatment and opportunity. We will continue to oppose efforts, such as the 2006 passage of the poorly-named “Michigan Civil Rights Initiative,” that diminish and obstruct the opportunities of the long-oppressed.
Sexual Orientation
The Michigan State University College Democrats fully supports the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered citizens and their alliances. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Justice denied anywhere diminishes justice everywhere.” We opposed the Defense of Marriage Act and the rift it creates within our society. The LGBT community should not be discriminated against in any manner, including employment, marriage, housing, education, and public accommodation.
