Civil Rights and Liberties

We are fully committed to the American ideal of equal protection under the law for all people, regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability, or economic background. While MSU and the American people in general have made great strides in equal treatment of all citizens, we realize progress in this area is not complete. The MSU College Democrats will continue to fight for efforts that promote equality of treatment and opportunity. We will continue to oppose efforts, such as the 2006 passage of the poorly-named “Michigan Civil Rights Initiative,” that diminish and obstruct the opportunities of the long-oppressed.

The Michigan State University College Democrats fully supports the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered citizens and their alliances. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Justice denied anywhere diminishes justice everywhere.” We opposed the Defense of Marriage Act and the rift it creates within our society. The LGBT community should not be discriminated against in any manner, including employment, marriage, housing, education, and public accommodation.
