Join the MSU College Democrats as we travel to Kalamazoo to kick off 2010 with the Michigan Federation of College Democrats and to solve “The Case of the 2010 Election!”
A great weekend is in store jam packed with guest speakers, candidates, trainings, and other theme-oriented events. Jointly hotest by Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo College, and Kalamazoo Valley Community College, MFCD will lay the groundwork for a successful fall.
This weekend is bound to be one of the most exciting of all MFCD events yet!
Attendance is of utmost importance to help us elect your 2010-11 officers, discuss constitutional amendments, and to gear up for one of our busiest years yet. Housing options will be announced in coming days, but there are many affordable hotels at different ranges very nearby to KVCC.
If you are interested in attending with the MSU College Democrats, please e-mail Kaiti Aprill at vicepresident@msudems.org to get further details and plan accommodations.
Come to the College Democrats Winter Kickoff Meeting with U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow! Come mingle with fellow Democrats for a good time, free food and find out ways that you can get involved this semester!
Other guests include Congressman Mark Schauer, State Senator Gretchen Whitmer, and other state and local elected officials.
The first twenty students to arrive will receive a free MSU Democrats t-shirt, so come early!
Born and raised in Michigan, U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow knows what matters to Michigan. She made history in 2000 when she became the first woman from the State of Michigan elected to the United States Senate.
From the County Commission to the State Legislature to the halls of Congress, she is a respected national leader on health care and manufacturing issues and champion for Michigan. She has risen in Senate leadership as Senate Conference Secretary and now Chair of the Democratic Steering and Outreach Committee.
We need to make sure that a Democrat is elected to represent Massachusetts in the United States Senate -- there is no room for error. If we don’t maintain sixty Democratic Senators, so many initiatives are at stake. From healthcare to holding the banking industry accountable, all we have worked so hard to achieve will be gone if Massachusetts goes red in the January 19th special election.
You can help make phone calls from the comfort of your own home today. Also, please visit Martha Coakley’s website today to learn more about her bid for the Senate and further opportunities to get involved!
Even though the Michigan Promise Scholarship has been eliminated by the State Legislature, WE ARE NOT DONE FIGHTING.
Over the next two weeks, Governor Jennifer Granholm is holding rallies and events at Universities across the state in order to urge the Senate to keep their Promises to our students. She needs our help to get the job done.
We need to urge the State Senate to take up additional revenue bills that will fund Michigan’s priorities – including the Michigan Promise Scholarship. The House has already passed meaningful revenues – such as closing business tax loopholes – in order to fund education. Can you take five minutes and urge the Senate to do so as well?
Please take five minutes and call these Senators today:
Senator Roger Kahn
517-373-1760
SenRKahn@senate.mi.gov
Senator Bruce Patterson
517-373-7350
SenBPatterson@senate.mi.gov
Senator Valde Garcia
517-373-2420
SenVGarcia@senate.mi.gov
Senator Randy Richardville
517-373-3543
SenRRichardville@senate.mi.gov
Senator John Pappageorge
517-373-2523
SenJPappageorge@senate.mi.gov
PLEASE USE THE FOLLOWING SCRIPT WHEN CALLING:
“Hello, my name is ________________ and I would like to urge Senator ___________ to fund Michigan’s priorities, including the Michigan Promise Scholarship, by supporting alternative revenues in the Senate. It is time for Senator ____________ to support Michigan’s future instead of partisan games in Lansing.”
This could be Michigan’s future if we don’t fully invest in our students and the Michigan Promise Scholarship. Urge the Republicans in the State Senate to reinstate and fund the Michigan Promise Scholarship. Find your Senator at http://senate.michigan.gov or call 517-373-2400.
As Michigan is heading full speed ahead towards disaster, we must demand action to invest in students by investing in tools that equip them for success. It is no surprise that businesses will continue to look for states that have a highly educated workforce; this means that we can’t let Michigan fall behind.
We must invest in education and our future by reinstating the Michigan Promise Scholarship. Don’t let the hopes of a brighter future sink because we didn’t act; call your Senator today and demand they fund the Promise Scholarship.
A few days ago Congressman Schauer cast a vote in favor of sweeping health insurance reform legislation that will offer every single American access to quality, affordable health insurance. After winning the 2008 election with less than 50% of the vote, Republicans have been salivating over a chance to take back the 7th Congressional District – and GOP candidates are lining up for a chance to run.
Today the GOP blasted news about Schauer’s town hall event tomorrow to their activist list. They are encouraging all of their members, activists, and teabaggers to make it out to the event and protest Schauer’s vote in support of the Affordable Health Care for America Act.
Whether Schauer is your Congressman or not, we need you to make it out, push back against the GOP and stand in support of health care reform.

The Affordable Health Care for America Act takes major steps towards fixing our country’s broken health care system by lowering medical costs for consumers, strengthening Medicare for seniors by closing the prescription drug donut hole, and helping small businesses compete by offering them affordable group rates through a health insurance exchange.
Please consider making it out to the town hall to support Congressman Schauer and have any questions about the bill answered.
With nearly 47 million Americans uninsured, it is more than clear that the time has come to pass health care reform. The Affordable Health Care For America Act, guarantees affordable health care for all Americans, increases choice for consumers, and reduces health care costs.
United States Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, unveiled the bill on October 29th. A vote on the bill can come as early as this Saturday, November 7th.
As college students, we need to support health care reform. Please call your representatives in Congress to assure them that their constituents want real reform now!
